Benin is the cradle of Voodoo and many guides and people will tell you that you must be extremely careful with photography so as not to be badly perceived and arouse animosity, not to create misunderstanding, discomfort, incomprehension ! It is an infinitely delicate and perilous exercise!
In this respect, the “Polaroid” camera proves to be an extraordinary, miraculous, and I dare say “magical” ally. (…) Thanks to him, I was able to share the originals with the protagonists, to offer them their image. (…) I remember children disappearing into the bush while running with the photo, a guide requiring them to return to an island already visited to give the photo to a mother, guardian of the soul of the salt village , of a young girl hastily changing out of her school clothes and waiting for me to pass in front of her village after having left the photo at her house.
The fact of being able to subsequently recover the negatives, of having reworked them digitally to exhibit this work is a bit of the icing on the cake or to remain in the field of “The icing on the cake” photography.
